Our Mission Statement
Weekend Angels is a Christian based nonprofit organization. Many children in our community depend on the free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch program provided by the school system. To provide nourishment on the weekends for children at high risk of hunger, we are providing food bags. Our food bags are provided directly to the hands of children and without regard to religious belief or ethnicity.
Why We Started
While doing volunteer work in a very low income area, a 5th grade child told me he had not eaten in 2 days. This happened in 2009 over the 3 day Easter weekend, this child's last meal was Thursday's school lunch. This was a slap in the face, how could a child here in my own community be hungry? I immediately began buying child friendly food and delivered food bags to this child's home and others every Friday. For several months I delivered around 15 food bags every Friday to children living in one apartment complex. Children living in poverty tend to move around frequently. When a child moved, it was hard wondering if they were still hungry. God then called me to deliver food bags to the local school so that more children could be reached. I feel that no child should be hungry and I will work tirelessly until that goal is accomplished.
This experience has changed my life and is why Weekend Angels was formed, to provide children food when they are unable to receive free breakfast and lunch through the school system. There are several other schools that really need food bags. Please help us to feed as many children as possible!
A Little About Myself
I am a stay at home mom of 2 beautiful girls, ages 7 and 10. My younger daughter was born with several medical conditions. After genetic testing, they could only come up with the diagnosis of Multiple Congenital Anomalies. She has had 8 surgeries including heart and spinal cord surgery. The Dr's thought she would not be able to walk, eat and would be cognitively impaired. She has proved them all wrong! We are very blessed at how well she has progressed. There are still several conditions that the Dr's have to monitor and more possible surgeries. My oldest daughter loves school and Girl Scouts. I am happy to be her Girl Scout Troop Leader for the past 3 years. Now my youngest is also a Girl Scout! Both girls love to help me pack the food bags!
